Maria Agnes Switala

April 13, 1931 — March 25, 2026

London, Ontario

Maria Switala passed away peacefully with her family at her side at University Hospital on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her husband, Pawel Switala, in 2006.

Born in Switzerland, Maria knew from the time she was a small child that she wanted to be a nurse. After graduating from nurses' college in Sursee, Lucerne, she moved to Canada in 1957. She had a rewarding career as a Registered Nurse at Brantford General Hospital, where she was frequently commended for her kindness and high level of efficiency.

Maria gave of her time generously as a volunteer in many organizations such as President of the Brantford Tai Chi Society and the VON to name a few. Maria was a world traveler who particularly loved the Yukon, where she traveled twice a year for adventures with her family. At home, she was a steady, supportive presence at her grandchildren’s sports games and recitals, always their biggest fan in her own quiet way.

For the past eight years, Maria lived at Horizon Place. She truly enjoyed her quiet life there and was deeply appreciative of the care she received and the friendly interactions she shared with both the staff and her fellow residents.

She was the loving mother of Jackie Playford, Dori Switala (David Storey) of Yukon Territory, and Helen Switala of Hamilton. She was the dear grandmother of Paul Playford (Georgia), James Playford, Sam Storey (Kimiya), and Josie Storey (Isaac). Maria is survived by her brother, Othmar Bechtiger of Switzerland, and was predeceased by six siblings.

Thank you to the staff at University Hospital for their compassionate care.

A private Funeral Service will be celebrated by her family at the O’Neil Funeral Home in London. Interment to follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, London.
