With great sadness we announce the passing of Maria Kyraszczuk, a strong-willed but kind and generous mother and grandmother.
Maria was born April 21, 1932 in a small village in the beautiful Carpathian mountains of Western Ukraine. Her parents raised four children in this farming community until the Second World War broke out and when the fighting neared their homestead, the decision was made to escape through Hungary to other parts of Europe for all but one family member. Maria’s eldest sister made the difficult decision to stay behind in Ukraine. The remaining family members settled in Austria for a few years, which is where Maria developed a love of chocolate and skiing in the Alps. A year or two after the war, escapees of the war had to disperse to other places and Maria’s father chose sunny Brazil to relocate his family, from the options available to them. Maria spent her formative young adult years in Brazil.
Later in her twenties, Maria traveled to London, Ontario to meet up with Fedor, a handsome, gentle, and spiritual man from the same area where she was born in Ukraine. Fedor captured Maria’s heart, they married in 1960 and they made London their forever home. Once settled in London, Maria pursued a nursing education and spent over three decades working as an RNA until she retired in her sixties. Maria was an active member in the Ukrainian community, including the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League, was involved in many cultural activities until her mobility was compromised by advanced health issues.
Surrounded by family, Maria passed away peacefully in London on Friday, December 19, 2025 in her 93rd year.Beloved wife of the late Fedor Kyraszczuk (2009). Dear mother of Anna Sawchuk (Terry) of London and Alexandria Antoniuk (George) of Etobicoke. Loving grandmother of Gena and Roman Sawchuk and Matthew and Greg Antoniuk. Maria is predeceased by her two sisters and brother. Maria is also survived by extended family in Ukraine, England, and the United States. Maria will be missed by many and forever in our thoughts.
Visitors will be received at the O'Neil Funeral Home, 350 William Street, London on Sunday, December 28 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm, with Panachyda on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Pokhoron/Funeral Mass will be held in Christ the King Ukrainian Catholic Church, 707 Nelson Street on Monday, December 29, 2025 at 10:00 a.m, followed by interment in St. Peter's Cemetery, London.
