It is with profound sorrow that we announce Grail Farrell (nee: O'Neill) passed away peacefully with her family at her side at the age of 84 at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario.
Grail was born to Thomas O’Neill and Jean Hay in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, John Gerald Farrell, her sons, John Jr. (Violeta), and Paul (Shauna) and by her younger brother James O’Neill. Grail was the proudest of grandmothers “Nanny G” to Julia, Kailey and Milica. She is predeceased by her parents and her middle son James.
In her youth, Grail was a highland dancer and played the drums in the McDougall Girls Pipe Band of Dominion, Nova Scotia. She travelled widely with the band to cities including New York and Chicago forming cherished memories and friendships.
Grail pursued her degree at St Martha’s School of Nursing in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. She graduated in 1961 with a compassion and determination that would define her lifelong career. As a dedicated nurse, Grail served many communities with grace, empathy, and unwavering professionalism. Her gentle strength and tireless care touched countless lives, both in hospital wards and in the hearts of those she comforted.
Grail was a Scouts Canada Beaver Leader iand played a major role in the annual St Patrick’s Day Parades in Montreal, individually creating the banners used to represent each of the Catholic parishes of the West Island.
Beyond her vocation and serving her community, Grail was a woman of quiet creativity and joyful spirit. She found delight in crafting and reading, often sharing handmade treasures and thoughtful stories with loved ones. She particularly enjoyed sharing books with her two avid reading daughters in law. Her love of Christmas was legendary—each holiday season was transformed into a celebration of warmth and sparkle, with traditions that will live on in her family.
Grail was a pet lover who had numerous cats as companions over the years. They have been waiting patiently in heaven for her and will now be reunited.
Grail was the ultimate hockey Mom heavily involved with suiting up her 2 goal tending sons, hand painting goalie masks, buying new equipment and cheering for saves in countless arenas throughout Quebec and Ontario.
Grail will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. One of her lasting legacies will be that she taught us to do it right way and to have fun along the way.
A private cremation has taken place. Details of a memorial visitation will be shared with family and friends.
